SEALC-GETSEA Language Tuition Support Application 2025-2026 Elizabeth Williams Thu, 06/12/2025 - 11:07

With support from the Henry Luce Foundation, the Southeast East Asian Language Council (SEALC) and the Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortia awards financial assistance to students who incur tuition fees when studying a Southeast Asian language via synchronous distance learning during the academic year at an institution other than their home institution. This award is intended to facilitate cross-institutional collaboration and increase access to Southeast Asian language instruction. Eligibility requires that the proficiency-oriented course is credit-bearing at a North American institution and that the applicant is a full-time student at a North American institution. Priority will be given to graduate students, but all are encouraged to apply. SEALC and GETSEA encourage applicants to consider attending the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) which serves as an excellent resource for summer language instruction. This award is intended to improve access during the academic year so that students can obtain multi-year instruction in a timely manner.

What does the assistance cover?
The award provides tuition reimbursement, minus a modest contribution from the student, for synchronous distance learning of a SE Asian language taught by a lecturer at a North American institution. Applications for tutoring arrangements or courses taught by FLTAs will not be accepted.

Application Deadline: The deadline for the 2025 – 26 academic year is July 14, 2025. Applications will only be considered complete once the SEALC has received 1) the online application and 2) a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s advisor, submitted via email to southeastasialanguagecouncil@gmail.com.

Call for Applications to the second annual JPSA-APSA Working Group on “Civically Engaged Research for Critical Issues in Society”. The 2025 Working Group will be held alongside this year's JPSA Annual Meeting from October 9-12 in Tokyo, Japan on the theme of “Political Transitions in Aging Societies”. The deadline for submission is June 1. I thought this may be of particular interest to you and your team at CU Boulder. We have received fewer applications than expected at this time, so if appropriate, we hope you will consider sharing the Call with your network.

Organized by APSA and the Japanese Political Science Association (JPSA), the program is an opportunity to share and improve research towards publication, develop new scholarly networks, and explore the use of civically engaged research in investigating some of the critical issues facing our societies. This year we invite submission from early-career scholars based in the United States or Japan who are interested in conducting civically engaged research related to issues of demographic change. Organizers will cover participation costs (including airfare and accommodation) for up to 20 qualified applicants.

El Centro de Estudios de Asia y África (CEAA) at El Colegio de México, Mexico City, is proud to host the 2025 Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies annual conference. This year’s theme is “Resilience, Cooperation, Progress.” In the face of rising isolationism and populism globally, how do citizens, scholars and activists maintain ties? How does civil society adapt? What kinds of connections can be made to overcome isolationism?

We invite submissions for panel and paper proposals with a wide variety of themes, but hope to encourage conversation with this year’s theme in mind, including conversations between Latin America, North America, and Asia.

Our goal is to help generate and support work that straddles or otherwise navigates the differences and overlaps between Asian Studies, Asian American Studies, and Asian Diaspora Studies as intellectual
formations and interdisciplines. Accordingly, we are putting out a call for panel proposals for the 2026 AAS conference. We will select several panel or roundtable proposals to sponsor for each conference. If a proposal is selected, Verge will help proposers constitute panels and roundtables by advertising CFPs. Panels and roundtables accepted for the conterence program will be tagged as "sponsored by Verge" and we will work with organizers to promote them to audiences interested in Global
Asias scholarship. The AAS conference is scheduled for March 12-15, 2026, in Vancouver, Canada. If you are interested in submitting a panel proposal for consideration for Verge sponsorship, please send a 250-word panel abstract along with a 2-page c.v. to

We live in an increasingly connected world, where labor, politics, culture, and content are in near constant flux and movement. While earlier theorization of transnationalism focused on networks that either originated or concluded in the West, new scholarship recognizes the importance of reconceptualizing transnational to focus on intra-regional movements, networks, and nexuses. We encourage proposals on all topics related to Asia from any discipline, and welcome participation from faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, independent scholars, K-12 teachers, and professions.

The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar in Global Asian Histories for 2026-2027 (with an initial due date of June 1, 2025).

The Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar is dedicated to the teaching of history, broadly construed, which is understood to include studies of the past, including the recent past, carried out within the departments and programs of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences.

In 2026-2027, one of two Farley Scholars will be hosted by the Global Asia Program. We especially encourage applicants with an interest in teaching pedagogically-innovative Global Asia courses that complement our current course offerings, aimed at students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds.

In keeping with University policy, the successful candidate will hold a continuing academic position at another university, or an equivalent position at another appropriate institution. The Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar is appointed as a Visiting Faculty Member for at least two terms in the academic year. (SFU operates year-round, with Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.) While at SFU, the Farley scholar will have the opportunity to interact extensively with faculty and students, and to stimulate discussion across disciplines. They normally teach one course and contribute to other types of relevant intellectual activity that will be open to students across the university. Farley Scholars are encouraged and supported in public outreach activities that may take a variety of forms. The stipend for the Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar is up to CAD $55,000 (commensurate with the length of the visit) and the Scholar is provided with a CAD $7,500 budget for public engagement activities.
